“We say we love flowers, yet we pluck them. We say we love trees, yet we cut them down. And people still wonder why some are afraid when told they are loved.”

“Today feels like I just stepped off a tilt-a-whirl. All buzzing,
screaming colors. This time of year my body always turns
into a fun house. I make my spine taut like a tightrope,
pray that I can make it long enough to feel the heat again.
Winter always throws everything off kilter. Like neon flares.
Like pop rocks in my mouth. I’m a wolf cub chasing her own
tail. I mistake my paw prints for those of a predator & wind
up nipping at my heels. There’s nobody around burning down
houses but myself. I am setting fires for fun & calling flame
swallowing my new art form. This production has to be over
the top if I want to live to see spring. My body doesn’t wilt in
the winter, it goes into overdrive. It screeches & reeks of
burning rubber. My name is not safe in my own mouth; my
tongue tosses it up like an acrobat without the net. I do not
land gracefully. I am spinning & the world is bracing itself
for the collision of our bodies. My spine is taut. I am poised.
I am playing pretend. This will not end delicately.”
